Play Practice

We were able to go and give our Christmas play a trial run at Grace Assisted Living.  We had a wonderful time performing for the people there and the kids did very well.  I think we are ready for Monday night.
Hope to see you at the Twin Falls High School Roper Auditorium.  The show starts at 6:30.  Please be there at 6:00.  ☺

Pumpkin Pie Day

Our pumpkin pie day turned out great!

We started by learning how to write "how-to texts."  These texts are non-fictional pieces.  They instruct us on how to do something.  We wrote a paper about "How to Make a Pumpkin Pie."  Students just guessed on these papers.  They turned out pretty cute.  One student said, "First, go to Walmart.  Next, find the pie section.  Then, buy the pie.  Lastly, take it home and eat it."  On Thanksgiving morning, that was sounding pretty good to me. ☺

Students then learned how to write a recipe.  They wrote the entire recipe of how to make a pumpkin pie from scratch.  On pumpkin pie day, students had to follow the recipe, all on their own.  They did fantastic and had so much fun!  It was a great experience.

Thank you so much to all of the parents who donated supplies, and especially thanks to those who donated their time.  Students were able to create a wonderful...and delicious...second grade memory.  I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Dodecahedron

In math, we are focusing on geometry skills.  Students have learned different 2d and 3d shapes and their attributes.  Also, we just finished our second reading unit, "How do animals play a part in the world around us?"  This project was perfect for our reading and geometry units.  Students began by studying habitats.  Each group was given a specific habitat to study.  They came up with facts about the area and animals that live there.  They wrote their facts on papers, that were then turned into dodecahedrons.  They turned out very well!

Do you know the attributes of a dodecahedron?

Fire Safety #1

In second grade, we get four sessions of fire safety.  The Twin Falls Fire Department does an excellent job of teaching us about what to do in case of an emergency.  Firefighter Dave came in to see us today.
He taught us about the importance of having TWO exits to escape your home, should there ever be a fire.  He talked to us about the importance of the family having a "safe meeting spot" once they get out of the house.  He suggested perhaps setting up a safe meeting spot at a neighbors house.  Thanks for the great information Firefighter Dave!

CRHS Library Field Trip

We are so lucky to be so close to Canyon Ridge High School.  The librarian there, Mrs. Johnson, is an old friend of Perrine's.  She used to teach here.  She is always very gracious to welcome the second graders.  She gives a wonderful lesson on fiction and non-fiction.  She teaches students how to find books in the library.  She gives such a fun lesson.
We enjoyed our walk to CRHS.

Mrs. Johnson started by going over our objectives for the day.

Students were sent on a scavenger hunt to find the book The Acorn People.

Of course...not knowing how to locate a book in a library...this proved to be a very complicated task.

Mrs. Johnson taught us how fiction and non-fiction are separated in a library.  Fiction books are on the short stacks, or shelves, and non-fiction is found on the tall stacks.

The kids loved hearing a couple of stories.  Mrs. Volle, the librarian assistant, read A Sick Day for Amos Mcgee.

Mrs. Johnson read a wonderful story about bullying, called One.

Mrs. Johnson was "mixing up" call numbers for books.

Time to go.  We had a great time.

Thank you so much to Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Volle, and Canyon Ridge High School!!

Sunflowers

Do you love sunflowers as much as I do?  They are so beautiful and I love that they grow anywhere, even in very harsh conditions.  The kids sure had a great time making their own sunflowers using black construction paper, Elmer's glue, and pastels.  The pastels were a little messy, but they turned out beautifully!

Swager Dairy

What a great opportunity we had to visit Swager Dairy.  In our reading unit, we were learning about how to care for animals.  Much care goes into the cows at the dairy.  The students, and teachers, were excited to ride the wagon through the dairy to see all of the cows, equipment, and care that goes into these animals.  We even got to see a brand new baby calf.  It was a great day.

Thanks so much to Swager Dairy!!
