Accelerated Reader

You may have heard your kids talking about taking "AR tests."  In my class we do AR each day.  Sometimes, there is time set aside for AR testing.  Other times, students test whenever they have a chance.  Here's how it works:

  1. Students take the STAR test.  This places them on an appropriate reading level.  Most students are 2's and 3's.
  2. Students choose books that correspond to their reading level.  They read them once or twice for understanding.
  3. Students fill out their AR folder and place it on my desk, letting me know they are ready for a test.  When it is their turn to test, they use a computer to take a short comprehension test.  They pass if they earn an 80, 90, or 100 percent. If a student does not pass, they may read the book again for another shot to pass.
Students build up points as they pass test, which are used for prizes.  Most students really enjoy AR.  Every book in my classroom is an AR book.  There are plenty to choose from.  You may have some AR books at your home.  Send the title and author to school with your child and I can let them know if that book has a test.  Tests may only be taken at school, but I am happy to let students test over the books they are reading at home.

3rd Quarter

Hopefully you have all had a chance to look over your child's report card.  I am proud of the work the children are doing.  They are all trying very hard.  If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.  I would be happy to meet with you.

As the third quarter begins, here are some tips for helping your child do well:

  • Please make sure that they are in school.  If they are sick, they should stay home, but please try your hardest to have them here on time.  It is very hard to make up many of our lessons.  Most of our work is not done with worksheets anymore.  We spend lots of times discussing and learning together.
  • Help your child to complete their homework each week, including 100 minutes of home reading.  Take turns reading to and listening to your child read.
  • Check your child's homework folder each week.  Review papers with them.  Help them understand what they may have missed on papers or celebrate what they did well.
Let me know if I can help you with anything.  Thanks for all you do!
